Watch out for turbulence in landing field due to very active thermal
activity. This turbulence makes this hill unsuitable for beginners or
teaching. OK for experienced pilots practicing and test flying gliders.
Mild Conditions: Int.
Moderate: Int. Strong: Int.
Watch set up gliders as they can ground loop (in zero wind) due to
thermals breaking off and (in wind) rotor. Strong thermals (1500 fpm)
can be present right in front of launch. Caution advised. Beware of
thermals breaking off from all over the top. NEVER leave you
glider unattended, even in calm conditions! Wire assistance may be
required.

Launch: Can get tricky in stronger winds. May be a good idea
to have someone on your front wires.
Landing: The small flats 400 metres from the north east end
of the airport directly below the site. As there is no airport manager
here, you may also land within the airport boundries provided you
don't conflict with other traffic. Check out the area before you land
here.
Beware of airport 2 miles to the south. Although it's not a
generally a busy approach path it cross's in front of launch. Do not
land in any crop fields. Farmers are very sensitive about this. No

Roads to Launch: 8 km West of Deys Centre in Savona on
Highway # 1, at the top of the hill after crossing the bridge, turn
right on Sabiston Lake Rd. Two kilometres north is the "Crash

you to a lower launch above the "Toilet Bowl" LZ. Following
the main road up, take the first major left fork in the road marked
"Smith Camp Forestry Road". After a couple of switchbacks
you will stop climbing. Take the first left turn and follow the narrow
unimproved road through to the meadow. Please park and carry your
glider (5 min.) into launch especially when it is wet as alpine
meadows take years to recover.
Camping is forbidden at the "Crash Pad" due to
repeated fires caused by campers. This is a Native Reserve. Please
respect their property. A good consistent flying site which produces
excellent thermal lift, Class E controlled airspace occurs from 2200'

Launch: On Highway #5 north of Kamloops turn east at Heffley
Creek. On the paved road, drive 30 km passing Heffley Lake and
Whitecroft. After a steep climb just past a cattle guard the valley
opens and you will see a maintainance area on the north side of the
road just before the bottom terminal of the first quad chairlift. You
will come back here and follow the five mile run to the "Top of
the World" when you have completed the requirements as stipulated
by Sun Peaks Resort. Please don't drive past the Patrol Shack at the
"Top of the World". These alpine areas are extremely
sensitive and are subject to ongoing botanical studies. Damaging them
could result in loss of the site.
Landing: During your briefing you will be told which areas
are acceptable.
There are plenty of year round activities at Sun Peaks. The
swimming pool & hot tub in the Rec Centre are only minutes walk
from the golf course, riding trails, hotels, codos and restuarants.
Contact Cental Reservations at 250-578-7710 for a fantastic selection
of accomodation. Off season rates are available.
The 747 Training hill is at the west end of the
"747" LZ at Deadman Creek. The LZ is so named because you
could land a Jumbo Jet here.
Buse Hill: A north facing cliff launch with a flat short
run. It is essential to have the correct angle of attack when reaching
the edge. (The author speaks from experience.)
The LZ: A dry grassy field on the east side of Buse Lake and
south of the Old Vernon Highway (the road to Barnhartvale from
Falkland.) The road up is just west of the lake. Get Permission to use
it as you go throught the farmyard! Take the left fork onto the
plateau behind the bluff. There is a road which heads straight north
from it to the ridge. Take the left fork to the launch. The road to
launch is very slippery when it is wet. This site isn't flown much
although excellent thermallyg flights have been had here and it's
right on a well traveled X/C route for Falkland to Kamloops.
La Farge, north of the La Farge Cement plant is not longer
used although negotiations with the land owner could be started again
at any time.
Pemberton Hills has not been flown for many years. Great
site though! Access is across the Thomson River from Pritchard. Take
the left fork and then the right fork to Pinantan Lake. The LZ is half
way to the turn off to launch. The launch road forks to the north
about 2/3 of the way to the lake then snakes up the sloping back of
the cliff. It's very difficult to see where the road goes as you get
up to the top. Launch is very small with room for only two or three
gliders to set up. An east facing cliff launch with a short run makes
for a great morning site.
The Punch Bowl on the south side of Hwy 1 west of Savona was
CLOSED by the landowner.
Raleigh's west and east launches have been
closed due to landowners concerns and the fact they have been
overgrown
